Singapore is a country that runs on rules. Some called a "fine country" because there is a lot of rules and regulations to be strictly followed, with no excuse and exoneration if you convicted.
However, it also considered as one of the safest & cleanest country to travelling to. Let some quick guidances below to help you avoid slip ups when travelling in Singapore.
1. Stand on the left instead of right
This point applied on all escalators in Singapore.
Believe that almost the world is having the direction that 'stand on the right, and the left is for walking', this is not applicable in the Singapore.
Please do correctly which is to stand on the left, and the right is for walking. Locals have no patience to remind you to stand at the right way gently, you have to bear this in mind to prevent being loathed.
2. No eating or drinking in the train
This has to be specially mentioned because it might not a common restriction in some other countries.
No eating (anything) and no drinking (expect plain water by using self water bottle) when you stepped into any MRT station, at all time, even when you are walking in the tunnel, train platform or in the train, strictly prohibited.

3. Give your seat to those who needs it more
If you do not wish to be published in Singapore gossip Facebook page by never released your seat to elderly/pregnant lady, please do it well.
Trust me, 80% of chance that you will be published if you failed to doing this. Locals are very free and interested in catching these.
4. No loud talking in the train or restaurant
Same that you will be published in Singapore gossip Facebook page by doing so. Locals don't like it, only themselves can do it.
5. Avoid to take train during peak hours
Weekday: 7am-9am and 5pm-7pm - Especially the East West Line (green colour line)
Weekend: 12pm-2pm
Please note that if you would have given options to choose which MRT line to take, always avoid the East West line (green line) which it is more dated, train down often, and more crowded. Preferably to choose Circle line (yellow line) and Downtown line (blue line) more.
6. Do not go to Orchard area in Sunday
Orchard road is one of the must-go place when travelling in Singapore.
But you are strongly suggested to avoid to going there in every Sunday. There will be flooded by Filipinos, you will have no comfortable space to walk and shops.
99% of Domestic worker Filipino in Singapore will be having their rest day in every Sunday, and Orchard area is their 'base' for gathering.
However, the crowd of Filipino shall only start from early morning until 7pm because most of them have to report home around that hour.
7. Never anyhow walk across the road
You are not allowed to simply walk across the road under 2 circumstances:
- There is no crosswalk and no pedestrian traffic light.
- The pedestrian traffic light hasn't turned green.
Experienced from England, people can anyhow walk across the walk without waiting the green light on, and even without pressing the pedestrian button. This is really a no-no in Singapore, you will get fine, SGD200-300, with no excuse.
8. Have enough cash with you
Singapore is a city country but it doesn't mean that credit card can be used everywhere, it is available mostly in shopping mall shops and restaurant.
But if you are in the hawker centre, food court in shopping mall, roadside stall and wet market etc, they accept no credit card at all times.
Some places do accept NETS (debit card) and cash but tourist should have no Singapore NETS card, therefore, please prepare enough cash notes with you.
Also, your cash note cannot be too big like SGD 50 or SGD 100 if you just want to pay a small amount like SGD 10, locals don't like it too.
Find chance to get more small notes by spending a little in the mall before heading to those places.
9. Never think to travelling to Malaysia for hours or day
As when we travel to Europe country like England, we might think to take a short flight to Paris, Switzerland etc. Which we think not to waste the chance since they are not that far.
Some tourists may think to travel to Malaysia (Johor Bahru) since there is only a bridge of distance away. You are super strongly encouraged to waive this itinerary when you're travelling in Singapore. And let's tell you why:
- Johor Bahru (Malaysia) is a unsafe city, with not few of pickpocket and robbery.
- Seemingly only a bridge of distance but it may takes you a least 2-4 hours to reach because it is like the world number 1 traffic jam area. Unless you booked shuttle train in advance, but believe that you hardly to.
- Foods are much nicer in Malaysia but not Johor Bahru area, because tourists are unable to go far, there is nothing special in Johor Bahru checkpoint area, even inside their nearby shopping malls. Unless you are travelling to Kuala Lumpur/Malacca/Penang by taking flight.
- Spend that 2-4 hours to discover more in Singapore will be more worthy.
Therefore, if you are planning to take a few hours to discover Malaysia due to your curiosity when travelling in Singapore, better remove this in your itinerary.
10. No littering

Strictly no littering, that is the main reason why Singapore is one of the cleanest country in the world. You will get fine, and also be published in Singapore gossip Facebook page too.
Do not think that nobody knows about your littering, Singapore has full of visible & invisible CCTV in every main road and alley. Your travel ID may get blocked when leaving Singapore at airport checkpoint, because you were scanned when offended.
Never challenge Singapore law and police efficiency.
11. No bribe
In any case that you are caught, never think to try to bride any policeman. Would tell you that 99.9% of policeman will never accept bride, and also you will be convicted bribing. One more serious offence added by then.
Same words: Never challenge Singapore law and police efficiency.
